High Commissioner’s Charge to Committee. fortnightly meeting. The Christchurch Unemployment Committee was informed at its meeting this morning that the High Commissioner’s Office, London, requested a remittance of Is 6d as payment for a copy of the English Unemployment Act forwarded at the request of the committee. It was decided that the sum be paid, plus exchange, and that a report on the document be submitted to the committee at a later date. There were present at the meeting Messrs E. 11. Andrews, J. S. Barnett, J. W. Beanland, W. W. Scarff, F. W. J. Belton, A. Peverill, M. Ross, W. J. Walter, W. E. Leadley, G. Harper, J. Maginness and F. W. Crampton; Mrs A. I. Fraer, the Rev F. T. Read and Mr L. X. Hichens (honorary secretary). Mr G. Harper presented the fortnightly report of the Central Relief Depot. F'or th<j week ended November 17 there were 30 new applications for rations. Two hundred and twenty-five were reviewed and four declined. Fourteen sustenance cases were granted and four declined. Rations were issued for 2018 families. During the week ended November 24 there were 27 new applications, 161 cases reviewed and six cases declined. Twelve sustenance cases were granted and two cases declined. There were rations issued for 2018 families. A letter was received from the Unemployment Board advising that from the date of the arrival of the letter no further placements, or extensions of existing placements, were to be arranged under scheme 4a. All place merits would be cancelled on January 5. 1935. This decision was not to apply to farmers working on their own properties under scheme 4a. Such cases were to be reviewed as usual when they' expired. Building Subsidy Scheme. It was reported that under scheme 12' (Building Subsidy) there had been received 261 applications to date. The value of the proposed work was £175,374 18s. The approvals totalled 198 and the value of the work was £140,040 10s. The subsidy totalled £11.430 18s 2d. It was reported that notice had been received by telephone from the Rangiora County Council stating that it had resolved to ask the Unemployment Board to allot No. 5 relief men to boroughs and counties and other authorities at the rate of two men for each permanent employee up to six, and thereafter as might be arranged to take part in whatever borough, county or other work as might be required. Jt was resolved to ask the Rangiora County Council to submit the resolution in writing.
