“My first acquaintance with New Zealand was the receipt of my mail.” said the Rev Dr James Moffatt, of New York, after his arrival at Auckland by the Mariposa. “The first letter I opened was one from your commissioner of taxes, formally reminding me of the requirement to make a return of my income while in the Dominion. That, to me. was rather amusing. 1 have come here to spend money. I suppose it is just one ot those formal notices one receives They gave me one in Sydney. I thought I had left taxation’ commissioners behind me.”
