TRANSPORT LICENSES.

Fare Reduction on Rangiora Service. The sitting of the Xo. 8 District Transport Licensing Authority was concluded this morning. Mr J. D. Hutchison presided, with him being Mr M. Bethel 1. Mr E. S. Brittenden appeared for the Railways Department. G. E. Clements applied for fare reductions on his Oxford-Christchurch passenger service. Mr Brittenden objected to a big t eduction in fares from Rangiora. saying that the railway service to Rangiora was excellent. In addition, the trains had to carry, a large number of school children at low rates. It would be a definite loss to the community if the revenue suffered. There was no objection to a Wednesday rate based on the first-class rail fare, but other fares should be kept above rail fares. The license was granted with the following amendments: Rangiora to Christchrch and return on Wednesdays, 3s fid, instead of 4s fid as at present; return to Fernside, 3s 9d instead of 4s fid: Rangiora on week-days, 4s fid instead of 4s. Fares from Stoke to Oxford were also reduced. A. S. Clements was granted a license for a-goods service for Akaroa and the bat's. F. Wilson, of Sefton, was granted a five-mile area license from Sefton, with a route to Rangiora and Southbiook, and back-loading. The license was for one vehicle, to be used for wheat transport. The license of A. Holland for a passenger service from Amberley to Christchurch was renewed, with a reduction in fares from 6s return to 5s fid return from Amberley. George Lowis, of Christchurch, applied for a renewal of his AshburtonChristchurch passenger service. The authority granted the license with the deletion of Wednesday trips; and giving the right to carry passengers on the 11 o’clock trip from Ashburton on Sunday night. (Proceeding.)

A warning of the danger of using canoes in the surf was given by the president of the Canterbury Surf LifeSaving Association (Mr D. V. Wilson' at the association’s annual meeting last evening. Mr Wilson urged surf club members to set an example by making persons using canoes abide by protective regulations.
