PEOPLE'S DAY.
Spectacular Display at Show. SUPERB STOCK PARADE BRILLIANT WEATHER FAVOURS BIG GATHERING. Huge crowds, an impressive parade of thoroughbred farm stock and brilliant sunshine combined to make People’s Day at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 1934 Show a complete success. Drawn up in front of the grandstand the parade was inspected by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, who at a complimentary luncheon tendered to him by the Association had spoken of the value of maintaining the standard of stock, and had expressed confidence in New Zealand’s future, particularly as a producing nation. This year’s show has been one of the most successful ever conducted by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, said the president of the association (Mr Gordon Fulton) yesterday afternoon. It was doubtful, he declared, whether the quality, range and number of the entries had previously been equalled, and the weather and attendances were all that could be desired.
North Island visitors to the show expressed the opinion that it was one of .the best provincial shows they had seen in New Zealand during the last twelve or fourteen years. It was almost up to Royal standard, they said. Mr Fulton referred especially to the sheep classes, which, he said, represented the best that had been shown on the ground. The quality of the entries was uniformly excellent, and reflected the good season which sheep breeders had experienced. Wool should be in much better condition this year, judging by the exhibits. Entries in the cattle section were well above those of previous years, and the quality again was excellent, he continued. From the point of view of the weather, it had been one of the most successful shows of recent years, while the increased attendances on both days was a pleasing sign of greater confidence and desire to spend among all sections of the community. Mr W. H. Nicholson, vice-president of the association, expressed complete agreement with Mr Fulton. The sheep entries, particularly, he said, were worthy of high praise, and were of a standard seldom before seen. Mr Nicholson said that many visitors*to the show had commented favourably on the improvements carried out to the grounds and buildings.
