Use of Public Cars.

Dear Sir,—“Ratepayer” says it is common knowledge that officials of other local bodies make use of public cars and petrol at week-ends. So why the fuss about Councillor Thurston using the City Council's car to go to Timaru. he asks. It is certainly not common knowledge that public cars and petrol are so used. It may be done, but the people don't know about it. Councillor Butterfield says it costs 4*d a mile to run a car. At that rate it cost the public £3 15s for Mr Thurston’s ride, in addition to a council employee’s wages for the time he put in. The meeting he was so anxious to attend had to deal with the question of conversion of loans and amalgamation of rates. The conversion of loans was all right. The amalgamation of rates was so worked that all the benefits that will come from the conversion will go to the ratepayers in the new suburbs. The ratepayers in the older parts, such as Sydenham. Waltham. Addington and the old St Albans will not benefit by the conversion. The Labour Partv was anxious to get this carried.—l am, etc., ANOTHER RATEPAYER
