In the old coaching days private conveyances and post chaises were sometimes fitted with beds and tables of a kind. A vehicle closely resembling a modern Pullman car, except that it was built upon a sledge instead of upon wheels, was used by the Empress Elizabeth of Russia, about 1745. In appearance the conveyance resembled a small railway carriage, including a row of oblong windows along the side. It was drawn by 24 horses, harnessed in pairs, and covered the distance between Moscow and St Petersburg—about 400 miles—in three daj's and three nights.
