AT RICCARTON TO-MORROW.

Concluding Programme of 1934 New Zealand Cup Week.

FORM OF CANDIDATES REVIEWED.

ANOTHER New Zealand Cup week of racing will be brought to a conclusion to-morrow. The Canterbury •lockev Club has an excellent programme of eight handicaps to offer its patrons, and an aggregate acceptance of ninety-four must be accounted very satisfactory for the last day of a strenuous campaign. But for the unexpected slump in the Members’ Handicap, the century would probably have been reached.

. If the weather holds, the track will he exceedingly fast to-morrow. Racing will be resumed with the Suburban Handicap, a high-weight event, run over a mile, which has attracted thirteen acceptors, who are:

nonesi -viaiu y • Nine of the field for this race, which , is run over a mile, took part in the Middleton Handicap, a similar event, but run over nine furlongs on Monday. The weights compare as follows: Midd. Suburb, st. lb. st. lb Semper Paratus (1) . 10 6 11 2 Honest Maid (2) .... 9 2 9 7 Revision (4) ........ 9 11 9 13 Heather Glow (5) .. 10 5 10 1 ' haste (6) 9 0 9 0 Palatinate (7) 9 6 9 0 Oottingham (9) .... 10 6 10 3 Sky Rover 9 2 9 0 Streamline (last) .... 9 0 9 0 Semper Paratus. who led all the way on Monday, thus meets the other eight on worse terms varying from 51b to 161 b. On Wednesday Honest Maid lost her chance at the start in the Ashley Handicap. Revision won the Port Cooper Hurdle, in which Yitaphone. who was having his first race for months, ran fourth and Hounslow fifth. Sky Rover nearly fell after going about three furlongs on Moritiay. Wine wo/* the Okain6 Trial, five furlongs, at Motukarara on October 27, and was fifth in the seven-furlong Randolph on Monday. On Cup day Heather Glow was second in the mile Apprentices’ Handicap. Hostile was unplaced twice at Geraldine in September. Honest Maid, Revision and Wino may appeal to backers.

Dollar Prince was in the first ten home in the Linwood Handicap, seven furlongs, on Cup day. Haere Tonu was fifth in the mile Ashley Handicap on Wednesday, and he seems to be coming on. Colossian was third in the Randolph Handicap, seven furlongs, on Wednesday. Quite Soon is referred to under the Otaio Plate. Tuirau won over five furlongs at Washdtdce and over six furlongs at Motukarara, and she was fifth in the Linwood Handicap, seven furlongs, last Saturday. Invoice, who was fourth in the Motukarara race lust referred to, now meets Tuirau 101 b better. Elbanor was third in that race, stopping badly in the run home. He was ninth in the Randolph. Bella Rosa, a stablemate of Dollar Prince, was second (to Rebel Chief) in the Brackenfield Handicap, seven furlongs, at Motukarara, and was sixth in the Randolph. Maroha was fourth in the Brackenfield, third in the Apprentices’ and ninth in the Ashley, both one mile. Silver Step was fourth in both the Linwood and Randolph and sixth in the Ashley. Madam Pompadour was tenth in the Apprentices’. Golden Dart, second for a good way. .finished sixth in the Brackenfield at Motukarara. Secret Paper was second to Tuirau over five furlongs at Washdyke and seventh in the Linwood. * onsummation made no show in either the Linwood or Randolph. Owlsgleam was beaten by only half a head (by Wino' in the Trial, five furlongs, at Motukarara. Tunneller was not in the first ten home in the Linwood. First Course was eighth in that race, but not in the first ten home in the Ashley. Knowledge was sixth in the Trial at Motukarara. Haere Tonu. Colossian and Silver Step are three who are likely to receive good support.

Cricket Bat ran a fine race when second to Sporting Blood in the ninefurlong Riccarton Handicap last Saturday. Too much notice should not be taken of his failure in the Jockey Club Handicap. He had to jump the fallen Manetho and did not settle down again properly afterwards. Red Boa won the mile Epsom Handicap on Monday. < ran ford was third in the Stewards’, in which Mobile ran fifth and Silver Streak tenth. The seven-furlong Criterion on Monday was won by Cranford 7.5, in lmin 24 2-ssec from Mobile 7.10. who was last at the home turn. Silver Streak 8.3 was fourth. This little field of five will have backers thinking hard. Cricket Bat may have most to fear from Cranford.

Silver Coat at his only two starts won the M’Lean Stakes and Dominion Handicap, both four furlongs, at Wingatui last month. Kinnoull was third in the M'Lean, fourth in the Welcome Stakes, and won the spring Nursery, five furlongs, on Wednesday, with 7st 131 b from Penelope 7st 91b. The latter was third in the Welcome Stakes and unplaced in the Irwell Handicap on Monday. Hororata raced well at Trentham and was fourth in the Irwell, the distance of which was half a mile. Round Up finished very well to run third in the Irwell. Honour’s Lad finished seventh in the Irwell Handicap. Bun Fight, *" who will be coupled with Hororata, was fifth in the Welcome Stakes and third in the Spring Nursery. Silver Coat and Round Up may be the popular selections.

The Metropolitan, which is the fifth race and run at 3.10 p.m., is referred to in another column.

Sea Fox, second in the seven furlong Linwood Handicap, on Cup Day. won the mile Ashley Handicap on Wednesday. with Bst 91b from Quite Soon 7st 101 b and Sibella 7st 121 b. Sibella was fourth and Quite Soon was sixth in the mile Apprentices’ Handicap on the first day. Scratchmere Scar won the Apprentices’ with Bst 61b from Heather Glow 9st, but was only eighth with 9st 31b in the Ashley on Wednesday. Heather Glow was fifth in the nine furlong Middleton Handicap on Monday. Tout de Monde was eighth in the Riccarton and fifth in the mile Epsom Handicap on Monday. Strong Light was fifth in the Spring Plate, but was not in the first ten home in the Ashley. Sungem was last in the Cup and eighth in the Middleton Handicap. Importance finished seventh in the Apprentices’. Hunting Go ran poorly in the Middleton, but was seventh in the Ashley. Earthquake was third in the Middleton, but not in the first ten in the Ashley. Pink Lapel fin- : ished thirteenth in the Apprentices' Handicap. Scratchmere Scar, Sea Fox and Importance will have admirers.

Synagogue looked unlucky when fourth in the Riccarton Handicap, but | according to his rider, he would not do his best at one stage of that race. ; He was a good second in the Derby. Tauramai, the Dunedin Guineas victor, j ran a fair third in the Derby, in which : W onderful was prominent in running , and finished fourth. The latter was only tenth in the mile Ashley Handij cap on Wednesday. Master Rej-nard. j w ho has been disappointing this season. • was sixth in the Spring Plate. Hostis has had two races to date. He finished ; well to run fourth in the five furlong j Trial, at Motukarara, and was third 1 in a big field for the seven furlong ; Linwood Handicap on Cup day. Knock j Out won over six furlongs at Rangiora ; and had a poor run when second in a I similar event at Motukarara. She was I up early in the Linwood, but | lost her place at the home turn and j finished eleventh. Trumpet Blast showed up early in the mile Ashley Han- ! dicap on Wednesday, but dropped right out. Gas Mask, making his debut. : came home well when eighth in the : Trial at Motukarara on October 27. ; Synagogue, Tauramai, and Hostis are I likely to be in request.

Red Boa is referred to under the Members’. Synagogue under the Stony- ' hurst and Sea Fox under the Otaio Plate. Rocket was not in the first ten in the Riccarton Handicap. in ; which Cleaner fared similarly. She i was sixth in the mile Epsom Handicap on Monday. Kemal Pasha, also not in the first ten in the Riccarton. was ! third in the Epsom. Ranelagh was ! eighth in the New Zealand Cup and seventh in the Fendalton Handicap. Gaysome was sixth in the Stewards’ , Handicap and third in the Criterion, | in which she was beaten one length and ( a half by the winner (Cranford) in lmin 24 2-ssec. Fair Weather led and i finished seventh in the Riccarton, sixth in the Criterion, and. third in the Avon, i .even furlongs. Monastic, third and second in the brush hurdle races, won the nine furlong high-weight at Motukarara on October 27. Quietly, second to Sam Smith over seven furlongs at j Motukarara. was fourth in the Epsom, also in the Avon. Sam Smith, who won over ten furlongs at Rangiora and over seven furlongs at Motukarara, was third i in the Spring Plate last Saturday and I second (narrowly beaten by Fracas) | in the Avon Handicap on Wednesday. : Grecian Prince led and finished seventh ;in the Le Rons Handicap, seven fur--1 1 >ngs. at Motukarara. Wise Choice l v as unplaced in the Open Handicap at Rangiora. In the absence of Synagogue, | Sam Smith. Gaysome and Quietly may ! appeal most. FOR KIA ORA STUD. LONDON, November 8. Mr John Dewar’s three-year-old. Mediaeval Knight, has been purchased for Mr Percy Miller’s Kia Ora Stud. ; New South Wales. £IB,OOO TWO-YEAR-OLD RACE. Most valuable two-year-old stake in the world is the Futurity run over six furlongs and a half at Belmont Park, New York. It is a sweepstakes with £SOOO added. The 1934 race was worth 92,330 dollars (approximately £18,466). of which the winner's share was 77,000 dollars (approximately £15,400). Run in September, it resulted in a victory for Chance Sun, owned by Mr J. E. Widener. As breeders and nominators of the winner. Messrs Widener and E. R. Bradley divided a further 3000 dollars (£600). Chance Son is by Chance Shot (Son of Fair Play) from Sunaihi. by Sun Briar, and is a descendant of Mistrella, dam of Trimestral, who produced Trimdon, twice winner of the Ascot Gold Cup. Might, who was third in the New Zealand Cup last Saturday, is a son of Graciosa, another daughter of Mistrella.

THE METROPOLITAN.

Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Fixture. TOMORROW’S PROSPECTS, (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON.- This Day. Although the main interest in racing to-morrow will centre in the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. there is also a good card to be decided at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Hastings. This club in recent years has regularly been holding its spring fixture during the Cup carnival week, and the date is proving a most satisfactory one. The totalisator will operate under the win-and-place system. The following horses are likely to be well supported: Tomoana Hurdles—Heliotype and Kahunoke. Trial Stakes—The Qrasper, Kentucky Song and Thane. Nursery Handicap—Mesurina and Plato Spring Handicap—Slippery and Sunny Sky. Glenaray Handicap—Cuddle, Lady Wessex and Blue Boy (or Sabatini). Flying Handicap—Souchong, Cyclonic and Slippery (or Cawbeen). Little Flaxmere Handicap—Hybis-eus-Maine bracket, Lavina and Hest. The programme is:

Ten Cup Runners Among 17 Acceptors. PROSPECTS OF KEEN CONTEST. For the mile and a half Metropolitan Handicap the Canterbury Jockej r Club has obtained the more than satisfac, tory acceptance of seventeen, as appended :

AT HASTINGS.

Ten of those eligible to run were starters in the New Zealand Cup last Saturday and the weights afford the following comparison: Cup. Metrop. Gold Trail (2) 7.9 5.9 Might (3) 7.0 7.8 Red Manfred (5) .... 8.5 8.4 Polvdora (6) 8.3 S.S Walton Park (7) 7.7 7.11 Cough (9) 7.0 7.0 Xightform (11) 7.0 7.0 Some Shamble (12) .. 7.5 7.S Great Star (13) 7.1 7.0 Silver Sight <ls) 7.0 7.0 ‘"'Sweet Agnes 7.8 5.2 * Non-starter in Cup. Gold Trail did well in an extraordinary race and Might finished strongly. Polvdora held about the same position throughout. Some Shamble was running second for over a mile and a half. Sweet Agnes won the mile Jockev Club Handicap on Wednesday with 7.12. Yintage won the For dal ton. one mile and a quarter, on Monday in 2min 4sec with 8.6. from Silver Sight 7.0 and Polvdora 8.11. Davolo was fifth with Sll. Signaller (ruhning-on) sixth with 7 13. Might eighth with 7.11. Cough ninth with 7.3, Southdown tenth with | 7.13 and S tee ton twelfth and last with S.S. Red Manfred was fourth. three lengths behind the third horse, Polydora. in the Canterbury Cup. one mile and a half, on Wednesday. On Cup day Davolo was seventh in the Stewards’ and Southdown a good third in the Riccarton. nine furlongs. Great Star was seventh in the Criterion Handicap, seven furlongs, on Monday. Rebel Star won the Spring Plate, one mile, on Cup day and was a close second in the Epsom Handicap, also one mile, on Monday. Red Racer waf eighth in the and last in the Avon, seven furlongs. Many Possibilities. Polvdora for many has been the big disappointment of the meeting. She has an opportunity to make some atonement to-morrow, but she will have to improve on her previous efforts at the meeting. She meets Yintage 111 b better than in the Fendalton and that is a substantial concession. Silver Sight rattled home in great style in the Fendalton. Sweet Agnes has yet to win a handicap over this distance, but she will have her share of supporters. Gold Trail ran a solid race in the Cup. She has been raised a stone, but the half mile off the distance is in her favour. The distance should not trouble Walton Park. Southdown will relish the drop in weight. Rebel Star is a new quantity ever the distance. Some Shamble fought out the mile and a quarter at Motukarara recentty to the bitter end. Signaller won over ten furlongs and over eight furlongs and a half in good style at Gore recently. He was doing well at the end of the Fendalton. Might on his Cup form looks to have a decided chance. On paper the race possesses its full share of possibilities and should arouse keen interest. Three who will be fancied are Yintage, Polvdora and Might. LATE RESULTS. Addington Second Day. OWNER RETIRES. Mr A. Alexander Gives Up Racing. (Special to the ** Star.”) WELLINGTON, November 9. The retirement of Mr A. Alexander from active participation in racing will be regretted b yall followers of the sport in Taranaki. A popular owner, the success of his colours was always heartily received. For the past couple of seasons Mr Alexander had not taken such a keen interest in racing as he used to do, and at present for the first timein close on tort years has no horse in training. One of the first horses raced by him was Tambourini, who was successful in hack races round the Taranaki district. His first important win was in the Taranaki Cup of 1907 with the Lochiel horse Glenullin, which he owned in partnership with Mr J. Gray. In 1913 Mr Alexander won the Wanganui Guieas with the Boniform mare Bonny Helen, who the following season won the C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton. In 1916 Bisogne was successful for Mr Alexander in the Auckland Railway Handicap, also capturing the A.R.C. Royal Stakes in 1917. These successes were eclipsed when that bonny mare Silver Link appeared on* the scene to carry the squire of Whenuakura’s colours, proving herself one of the best of the Dominion’s sprinters up to a mile. Silver Link won [ the Taranaki Stakes, Manawatu i Stakes, Hawke’s Bay Stakes, and North * Island Challenge Stakes, putting up a : splendid performance in the latter race, ? carrying 9st 131 b and running the seven furlongs in lmin 25sec, then record time : for the race. Silver Link’s most notI able performances in handicap events > were in winning the Easter Handicap 5 and the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie. Another win in weigh t-for-age events for Mr Alexander was the Middle Park Plate, won by Gaillard in 1924. , With Silvermine, a son of Silver Link, 5 he won the C.J.C. Stewards’ and the Thompson Handicap at Trentham.

NIGHTLY’S WIN.

Hall Mark Easily Beaten at W.F.A. OAKS TO ALIXURA. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received November S. 7.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE. November S. The weather was fine, after heavy rain, for the third day of the Victoria Racing Club's meeting, at which there was a moderate attendance. The New Zealand jockey, K. Voitre, made a favourable impression with his handling of Worthing, the winner of the Maiden Plate. The colt, who is owned by his breeder, Mr Sol Green, won in impressive style. Strathardale had a comfortable win in the Byron Moore Stakes. The New Zealand colt. Golden Promise, who was suffering from shin soreness, did well to secure second money. The winner is raced by Mr L. K. S. MacKinnon, the chairman of the club. He has had two wins and two thirds in four starts. Nightly led all the wav in the C. B. Fisher Plate, and was not extended. The time was 22£sec outside the race record. Hall Mark made no impression on Nightly in the final stages. Upoko Ariki finished fast to narrowly beat the pacemaker, Burlesque, in the Veteran Handicap. Melisande was never dangerous. VII Hus was prominent all the way. and beat the fast finishing New Zealandhied Bunsby Gaze in the Carnival Handicap. Allenby was unlucky, his rider losing his irons a furlong from home. Hey wood, trainer, and Mr Cobbald, owner of Villius were associated with Danilo's success in the Carnival Handicap last year. Alinura, owned and trained in South Australia, improved on her Wakeful Stakes form to register a comfortable win in the Oaks. She won the recent South Australian Derby. Quarto and E>aughter of the Wind ran game races, but Queen Helen and* Limyris were below expectations.
