PEDIGREE DOGS.

Canine Aristocracy on the Benches. The Canterbury Kennel Club’s twenty-ninth annual show opened today in conjunction with the Canterbury A. and P. Association’s Metropolitan fixture. Entries in almost all breeds were excellent. AS was to be expected in a province where gun dogs are not kept merely for exhibition purposes, the capable and popular codker spaniel (black and 0.T.8.) headed the list of entrants, numerically, with the good total of 24. The gun dogs were a credit to their owners, there being a grand total of 77, made up of Setters (English and Irish), Labrador Retrievers, Springer and Clumber Spaniels and Pointers.

Alsatians, despite the criticism of recent months, Pekinese and bulldogs were equal- in second place with IS entries. The figures in the bulldog classes were particularly pleasing, as they demonstrated that this magnificent dog is regaining its erstwhile popularity. The terrier classes were good, and if they failed numerically in some instances, the quality displayed was ample compensation. Pomeranians, Irish Terriers, Scotch, Cairn, Airedale and West Highland white terriers all contributed their quota to the success of the exhibition. Mr H. Hir.chliff, of Wellington, was judge of all breeds. The prize list Is as follows: Sydney Sillcy Terrier*. Dog or bitch, puppy (2)—Mrs A. A. Johnson's My Lady Betty 1. Mrs A. C.
