MEMORIAL PICTURE.
Presentation of Portrait of Professor Scott.
GIFT TO ENGINEERING SCHOOL. A fine memorial portrait of the late Professor R. J. Scott was this morning presented to the School of Engineering at Canterbury College by representatives of a committee of former students. Mr A. Nicoll was the artist, and he has caught on canvas the Olympian character of the man who was responsible for the birth and growth of the school of engineering His energy and foresight were themes with all the speakers who considered that the present leading position of the school of engineering was largely due to the labours of Professor Scott. On the frame of the portrait is the inscription. “ Robert Julian Scott. 1861-193*). Head of the School of Engineering, 1894-1923.” Mr F. T. M. Kissel, chief electrical engineer of the Public Works Department, made the presentation on behalf of the memorial committee. It had been the wish of former students, said Mr Kissel, to do honour to the memory r of Professor Scott, who had passed away some four years ago It was felt that his chief memorial was the school which he was instrumental in founding and in the students who had passed through his hands and had gone from success to success in all parts of the world. But the committee had wished for some tangible evidence of their respect. Mr C. T. Aschman, chairman of the C anterbury College Council, replied on behalf of the school of engineering and short speeches were made by Professor P. 11. Powell, of the engineering school, and Mr T. R. Burt, one of the oldest living ex-students who studied under Professor Scott.
