Notes From the Course,

Sea Gift made two breaks and then won the Spring Handicap by a length and a half. Her second mistake at the end of two and a half furlongs enabled Teviot Downs to head her, but approaching the mile post, he broke and then one of his reins snapped and' he galloped for the remainder of the journey. New Metford did well to secure second place after a slow beginning. Raclaim dropped back over the last two furlongs after being well placed for a mil? from the rise of the barrier. The veteran Cannonball was prominent all the way to register a creditable third. A feature of the race was the performance of Worthy Queen, who from 132yds behind. finished fourth after trotting the mile and a half from the starting post to the winning post in 3mirt 12sec. She covered the first half mile in lmin 3sec and the mile in 2min 7 l-ssec. Sea Gift was favourite with £875.

Xew Metford carried £195 and Cannonball £157. Empire Handicap. Cloudy Range won the Empire Handicap after being seriously threatened by Peter Locanda over the last fifty yards. Cloudy Range was in third place when the field had settled down but moved up into the lead approaching the mile post. Half way down the straight, his pilot was driving a confident race and he looked to be winning comfortably when Peter Locanda swept down on him from the outside and Cloudy Range just managed to win by a short head. When the barriers were released. War Paint was first to break the line, but at the end of a furlong Nelson d’Oro took charge and led through the straight with War Paint, Cloudy Range, Muriel d’Oro, Craganour, Prairie King. Linella and Eureka Boy racing in close formation. There was little change until the mile was nearly completed where Cloudy Range took charge. He was followed into the straight by Purser, Nelson d’Oro, Craganour, Prairie King. Eureka Boy and Peter Locanda. Cloudy Range looked an easy winner at the distance, but Peter Locanda put in a sensational finish and just failed to catch him. Cloudy Range was favourite with £IO4B. Peter Locanda carried £822. Yaldhurst Handicap. The Auckland representative. Worthy Light, with £1445 10s. was a hot favourite for the Yaldhurst Handicap. However, he was beaten half a mile from home and finished second to last. Arethusa led off, but Trampfast had charge passing the stand the first time from Arethusa, Master Roy, Harvest Child, Roddy. A vernus and Worthy Light. Trampfast continued in charge, and with a round to go his nearest attendants were Roddy, Master Roy. A vernus. Worthy Light, Harvest Child and Belinda. The order of the leaders was the same with half a mile to go. Trampfast reached the straight first, but Harvest Child shot through. Gold Tinge finished well, but Harvest Child won by a length and a half. Ayrmont Chimes was too lengths away third. Master Roy and Kingcraft were next. Harvest Child carried £747 10s. INVESTMENTS ON CUP. The coupled horses Indianapolis and Mountain Dell were favourites lor the Trotting Cup with £IB4B. Red Shadow being second favourite with £I7OB.
