EXTORTIONATE CHARGES.
New Zealand Butter in U.K. Restaurants. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, This Day. Mr F. S. Lay cock, after a seven months’ tour of the Old Country and the Continent, said that he had found an unreasonable prejudice against New Zealand butter and meat. For no reason, many English- people who used colonial butter for cooking would not place it on their tables, preferring the Danish product. This conservatism also held against a greater consumption of New Zealand meat. He had had meals of New Zealand and English meat and he had noticed no difference in the quality. Extortionate charges were being made for New Zealand butter by catering establishments, who served insufficient butter to suit the requirements of New Zealanders. The price ot butter as retailed by caterers was 4s Sd a lb. The charge was a gross imposition. A move should be made to induce catering firms to supply greater quantities with orders and New Zealand producers would then find a market. for bigger supplies. Mr Laycock, who is in the wool trade, said that Bradford was depressed. The mills had lost money on their last season's buying. Prices have dropped by 25 per cent and it was impossible to forecast the state of the wool market in New Zealand during the coming season. The position could change rapidly if Germany again entered into buying and France went off the gold standard. ,
