PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mrs Moreland has returned to Christchurch after a visit to Timaru. Mrs C. J. Ferrier, of Christchurch, has arrived in Auckland by the Mariposa from San Francisco. Mrs Arthur Thomson. Montreal Street, has returned home from a visit to Auckland. Mr and Mrs W. Howard Booth and Miss Noel Booth, Carterton, are visiting Christchurch. Mrs Maurice Macfarlane, “ Awapuni,” Waikari, will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow, and will be the guest of Mrs George Francis, Innes Road. Mr and Mrs George Tobin, Invercargill, who are visiting Christchurch for several weeks, are at present staying with the Rev C. A. Tobin, Burwood. Misses Bertha and Jessie Forbes, Cheviot, are staying with their aunt, Mrs Alex Forbes, Murray Aynsley Terrace, Opawa.

Miss Joan Harper, Grassy Hills, Waimate, will arrive in Christchurch tomorrow to visit Mrs J. W. K. Lawrence, Fendalton.

Mr and Mrs T. Mowbray Tripp, “ Silverton,” Geraldine, who are visiting Christchurch, have taken up residence at their town house, Park Terrace. Mr and Mrs John Montgomery, Fendalton, who have been visiting Britain, Europe and Egypt, will arrive in Sydney next week, and. will leave for New Zealand on Saturday, November 17.

Mrs W. H. Rishell, Oakland, California, arrived in New Zealand by the Mariposa to visit a friend, Miss Mary M’Mahon. She is the guest of Mrs A. P. M’Mahon, Chester Street. Miss Betty Black, Dunedin, is staying with Mrs W. G. Scannell, Papanui Road, for the .races. Later she will visit Ashburton, where she will be the guest of Mrs Arthur Nicoll.

Mrs D. W. Cameron, Ivarori, Wellington, and Mrs G. H. Birch, Mount Eden, Auckland, are the guests of their sister, Mrs A. Edwards, Woodend, North Canterbury.

Mr and Mrs Derrick Gould, Fendalton, Mr and Mrs R. M. Johnson, Mount Torlesse, and Mr and Mrs Peter Hall, Fendalton,. who are visiting Australia, are expected to return on Wednesday, November 21. Mrs Donald Dobson. Fendalton, who has been the guest of Mrs Esmond Goodwin, Fairlie, has returned to Christchurch, accompanied by Mrs Goodwin, who will stay with her for Carnival Week.

Mrs Robert Malcolm, Park Terrace, and Mrs W. Jennings, St Albans, who are among the Christchurch delegates to the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union Conference at Dunedin, left for the south y'esterday’.

Miss Bromley Cocks, Ranfurly Street, Provincial Commissioner of Girl Guides in Canterbury, will leave next Monday for Napier, where she will attend the annual conference of Girl Guide Commissioners from all parts of the Dominion. Miss Edith Penny, “ Tintinhull,” Papanui, left last week to visit Queenstown, travelling via Cromwell, and will return via Waimea Plains, Dunedin. She will be the guest of Mrs L. Gilkison, Lumsden, and later of Dr and Mrs Carswell, Dunedin. Miss Marion Wilkinson, Christchurch, arrived in London on September 27, and will probably be here until the beginning of August of next year, writes the London correspondent of the “Times.” She has been paying a flying visit to relatives in Yorkshire, and is at present taking a short course at King’s College, but her plans when that is finished are still rather vague. She hopes to see a good deal of the British Isles and possibly to go abroad next summer.

Members of the committee of the Christchurch Swords Club said farewell at morning tea yesterday to Dr and Mrs C. E. Beeby, who left last evening for Wellington, where Dr Beeby will take up his new position as chief executive officer to the New Zealand Council of Educational Research. Dr Beeby and Mrs Beeby were members of the Swords Club for several years, and Dr Beeby was this year’s president. Mr H. Cato, vicepresident of the club, thanked both guests for what they had done for the sport of fencing in Christchurch, and expressed the hope that they would visit the club when in Christchurch. Mrs W. IT. Montgomery, Wairewa, Little River, who has been abroad for some five months, returned home on Sunday morning. Mrs Montgomery was accompanied by her daughter. Miss H. Montgomery, to Vancouver and New York, where Mrs Montgomery joined some friends and sailed on the s.s. Carinthia on a five weeks’ cruise to Iceland, Norway. Sweden, Denmark and Russia. Mrs Montgomery spent several days in Moscow and Leningrad. After the cruise Mrs Montgomery' met her daughter again and spent about a month in England and Scotland, and then returned to New York by the Berengaria. She then left for Santa Barbara. California, where she was the guest of Mrs Irving Wright, and returned to the Dominion bv the Marina from Los Angeles after spending some days with friends in that city. Miss Eleanor C. Parkerson. of Christchurch, who is a Karitane nurse, has been seeing a number of interesting things since her arrival in England. including most of the annual events such as the Aldershot Tattoo, writes the London correspondent of the “Times.” Her first case was with a member of the household of Buckingham Palace, through whom she saw the Palace and also a presentation at court and the trooping of the colour from an exceptionally good viewpoint. Miss Parkerson also went to the Royal garden party in July. She has been in England about twenty' months, and her stay is indefinite. Recently she spent a fortnight walking about 100 miles in the Lakes district with two New Zealand friends. She has also travelled Surrey. Sussex and Norfolk extensive.lv. spending several days on the Norfolk "Broads, and she has visitde nearly all the cathedrals within a hundred mile radius of London.
