COLLECTOR’S THEFTS.
Appropriated Cash Owing to Firm. Engaged as debt-collector by’ a city firm, George Alexander Morris, 28 years of age, of Caledonian Road, appropriated some of the money to his own use. As a result, he was charged this morning, in the Magistrate’s Court, with failing to account for £29 9s to Daue and Yates, for whom he had collected the money’ between April 23 and October 1, thereby committing theft. 1 The accused pleaded guilty’ through his counsel, Dr Haslam. Chief-Detective Dunlop said that complainant, Mr Daue, had been in business with Mr Yates in an upholstering business. The partnership was dissolved, and Morris was engaged by \ ates to collect debts amounting to £4O 9s. Of this total, Morris had failed to account for £29 9s. He admitted converting the money to his own use. Dr Haslam said that Morris had been carrying on business for some time as an accountant, but an injury prevented him from doing his work. He was hard up against it financially, and had to support, in addition, an invalid mother. He made a full disclosure to the police. Morris was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within two years. He was also ordered to repay the amount stolen in 5s weekly instalments.
