“ONE MORE RIVER.”
Tivoli Shows Galsworthy Story.
Following a successful run at the Regent Theatre, the Universal film, “One More River,” began a short season at the Tivoli on Saturday, packed “houses” again testifying to the excellence of the attraction.. Fine acting by an almost entirely English cast, a Galsworthy story and capable direction by James \\ hale ensure good entertainment. The screen-play of the Nobel Prize winnner’s last novel comes from the pen of R. C. Sherriff (famed as the author of “Journey’s End ”), whose remarkable sense of dramatic values make him especially suited for the task of adapting books for the screen. Although the picture was filmed in Hollywood, the settings succeed remarkably well in simulating the English atmosphere. This success is all the more remarkable when the wide variety of the scenes is considered. Especially noteworthy are the sets representing “Melton Mews,” the English law courts, and a rural village with its ancient inn and parish church Diana Wynyard. as the unhappy heroine, gives her consistently sincere, restrained performance, but the honours are stolen from her by Mrs Patrick Campbell, who is delightfully natural and humorous. Jane Wyatt, the only American in the cast, makes her film debut a creditable one. Colin Clive, as Diana Wynyard’s brutal husband, and Frank Lawton, as her platonic lover, both prove capable players, but perhaps Lionel Atwill and C. Aubrey Smith, though they have smaller parts, will be longer remembered for more natural performances. Good “shorts” complete an enjoyable programme.
