Wanganui Rowers Beaten by London.
United Press Assn.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 4. The Duke of Gloucester had recovered sufficiently yesterday to enable him to visit Geelong, where he was welcomed by fifty thousand people, lie returned to Melbourne in time to attend the Henley Regatta, where the New Zealanders rowed successfully, though they did not win any finals. 11 is Highness, who was determined to avoid any further disappointment for the people, said that nothing but a deluge would keep him away. The day, however, was brilliantly fine, the Henley pageant being brighter than ever before. With the Royal Ensign fluttering picturesquely astern, the Duke’s launch followed one race. More than a hundred thousand people lined the banks of the Yarra. A gay and festive crowd sauntered about the lawns, and the Centenary spirit held full sway. Decorated canoes, launches and houseboats adorned the river. Visitors declared that the spectacle was the brightest seen so far. Dancing was held on the lawns in the evening, amid trees festooned with coloured lights. Fireworks soared into the sky. Leading easily from start to finish, London defeated Wanganui in the race for the Challenge Cup. Conditions were perfect. London defeated Hawthorn by a length and a half in their heat, and Wanganui defeated University by a length in their heat. In the first semi-final, Wanganui defeated Mercantile by a third of a length. London’s time in the final was 4min 37sec. Sculling results were as follows: Yarra Challenge Cup—First heat: Abbott (Petone) 1, Pepple (Yarra) 2. Power (Melbourne) 3. Won by three lengths. Second heat: Smith (Waitemata) 1. Ileidrich (South Australia) 2. Won by six lengths. Third heat: Turner (New South Wales, holder of the cup) 1, Tipping (New South Wales) 2. Fourth heat: Ilansen (Footscrav) 1. First semi-final: Turner 1. Abbott 2. Peppier 3. Second semi-final: Smith 1. Hansen 2. Final: Turner (N.S.W ) 1. Smith (Waitemata) 2. Won by a length and a quarter. Time—smin 28 sec. Abbott was distressed at the end of his semi-final. GOLF COMPROMISE. MELBOURNE, November 4 A compromise has been reached in the golf dispute, J. 11. Kirkwood and Gene Sarazen abandoning their exhibition game on Saturday in favour of one on Sunday, and the players being allowed to compete in the Cetnenarv championships.
