Two Year Old Classic Contest. Not since 1929. when Praise was successful, has a South Island representative won the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes. Of the eleven still eligible to run in this event to-morrow, Bun Fight, Greek Shepherd, II Duce and Desert Chief will be making their debut. Hine Ra raced in Sydney last month. She showed up early in the Gimcrack Stakes but finished well back. In the division of the Canonbury Stakes, won bv Golden Promise. Ilina Ra finished sixth, and the “ Sydney Morning Herald ” subsequently remarked that she had run a satisfactory race. When Kinnoull won the Trial, five furlongs, at Oamaru on September 29, the unplaced lot included Silver Sail and Penelope. Silver Sail was second to Silver Coat in both the M’Lean Stakes and Dominion Handicap at Wingatui, Kinnoull running third in the M’Lean. Penelope was third in the Wellesley Stakes and won the Roseneath Handicap, five furlongs, at Trentham. Ilaut Monde was unplaced in the Prince of Wales Handicap, four furlongs, at Napier Park on September 29, but won the Taitai Handicap, five furlongs, at Trentham. Romp Along was unplaced in the latter and fourth in the Roseneath. Symcony was second (to Severe) in the Juvenile Plate at Marton on September 5. He won the Foxton Two-year-old Handicap, four and a half furlongs, on September 22. At the Auckland spring meeting he was second (beaten by a length) to Galilee in the Welcome Stakes, when the five furlongs was run in 59 3-ssec, and he won the Musket Stakes, five furlongs, in lmin. Symcony, Penelope snd Hine Ra may appeal most to investors.

Twelve months ago Palantua not only broke the time record for the New Zealand Cup, but registered new figures for Australia and New Zealand for two miles. Her time was 3min 22 l-ssec and she carried 7st lib. The previous Australian and New Zealand record was 3min 22] sec by Star Stranger with 9st 41b in the Trentham Gold Cup in March, 1928. 'The best time in a New Zealand Cup had been 3min 23 l-ssec, made by Fast Passage (Sst) in 1932. Fast Passage still holds the record for the Auckland Cup. With 8.11 on her back, she won that event on Boxing Day, 1932, in 3min 23 4-ssec. The best Australian time for two miles is 3min 22£sec. created by Canning Queen (7st 91b) at Ascot (Brisbane) in June 1928. and equalled b} r Gwillian G (7st) in the Svdney Cup of 1930. For the Melbourne Cup the record is 3min 22‘lsec, made by Windbag (9st 21b) in 1925 and equalled by Spearfelt (9st 31b) a year later. The world’s record for two miles is 3min 19 2-ssee, created by Pradella. j carrying Sst 41b, at Ascot (England) in ! June, 1906. Exterminator ran two , miles Belmont (U.S.A.) in 3min 21 j 4-ssec* in September, 1920, with 9st 21b ! on his back. Other Days : Other Times. When Carbine won the Melbourne ! Cup of 1890. his time. 3min 28'lsec. was ! a record. The first New Zealand Cup; won by Tasman in 1885 occupied 3min 361 sec. The slowest New Zealand Cup was that of 1884, when Vanguard took 3min 49sec. The Australian record for two mijes over hurdles now stands at 3min 35sec. while over fences it is 3min 41seo. In Canada fourteen vears ago a horse named Jim O. was credited with winning a two miles steeplechase in 3min 35 2-ssec. MIGHT’S RIDER L. TT. Jones, the apprentice whose mounts at.
