LAWN TENNIS.

Second Match Series Opens To-day. EXCELLENT CONDITIONS. The second series of matches in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s inter-club competitions opened to-day at Wilding Park and club courts. Unlike last Saturday, when the first series of matches had to be postponed because of rain, conditions were excellent and some good tennis was seen in the various grades. Ten matches in all were played at Wilding Park, one in the A grade, four each in the B and 0 grades, and one in the D grade. The others were played at club courts. Progress results in the *A grade were as follows: A GRADE. Section 4. BECKENHAM IT. v. WOOLSTOX 11. Women’s Singles—Miss W. Watson lost to Miss J. Fletcher, 0-6. Men’s Doubles—Ford and Williamson beat Parish and Jordan, 9-5; Newbury and Lawrence beat. Smith and Kirk, 9-7. Women's Doubles—Misses Watson and Carter lost to Mesdames Douglas and Hobson, 3-6: Misses Drury and Bain lost to Misses Dryden and Fletcher, 4-6. Combined Doubles.—Miss Watson and Williamson lost to Miss Fletcher and Parish, 5-6; Miss Bain and Lawrence lost to Miss Hobson and Kirk, 5-6.

AVONSIDE CLUB

Season Opened This Afternoon. A recent marked increase in membership and considerable improvements that had been effected at the club were mentioned by Mr C. L. Berry, president of the Avonside Tennis Club, as indications of a very successful season. There were other indications in the large attendance of players at the opening of the season at the clt*b this afternoon. Mr Berry, in performing the opening ceremony, congratulated the committee of the club on the successful resuPs of their enthusiastic work. An endeavour had been made to re-establish the club’s Pnanres on a sound footing, and it bad resulted in a very successful membership drive. Two of the lower courts had been “ re-cushioned.” and further improvements were contemplated. The efub would again enter teams in the inter-club competitions.
