NEWS FROM THE PORT.
Watersiders Have a Quiet Week. There has been a scarcity of shipping at Lyttelton for the last fortnight and each day has seen many watersiders waiting near the Coronation Hall, hoping to be selected for a job on the arrival of a coastal steamer. The delay of coastal ships at Auckland was instrumental in causing further slackness, and yesterday’s pay-sheet was a small one. Many of the watersiders were unable to meet their weekly bills, through not having earned more than a few shillings, for the week. Next week should see the port busier, for in addition to three overseas vessels—the Tairiaroa, the Canadian Cruiser, and the King William, a number of the larger coastal vessels are due. Labour Day Excursion. Weather permitting, the launch Awhinanui will run an excursion to Port Levy on Monday, Labour Day, leaving Lyttelton on the arrival of the 8.55 a.m. train and returning from Port Levy at 5 p.m. The excursion will afford an eighteen miles sea trip and a long day at the increasingly popular resort. Week-end Fixtures. The week-end fixtures are as follow : Yachting—Opening of Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club’s season. Labour Day. Golf—Closing of Lyttelton Golf Club’s season at Charteris Bay, Labour Day. Sacred community “sing” at Lyttell ton Methodist Church, 6.15 p.m. to-mor-row, and service. “Our Church’s Social Creed.” Bowling—Opening of Lyttelton Club’s season this afternoon. Personal. Sergeant D. Wilson, of the Lyttelton police, is spending a holiday at Rakaia. Members of the Lyttelton staff of the Shell Oil Company met Mr H. Mettrick on the eve of his marriage and presented him with a teaset. In making the presentation, Mr J. Stewart, superintendent of the Shell installation at Lyttelton, said that Mr Mettrick was one of the original hands of the depot when it was opened in 1928. On behalf of the staff he extended good wishes to Mr Mettrick and his bride-elect.
