TALE OF A LAMP.
It Fell Off in Rakaia Gorge.
CYCLIST’S NEW EXCUSE. Stating that his lamp had dropped off and rolled down a steep gully in the Rakaia Gorge, a cyclist in the Magistrate’s Court this morning produced a new excuse for riding without a light at night. Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., said that it was expecting a good deal of him to believe the story, but he merely convicted defendant and ordered him to pay costs. The defendant. Cyril Barnett, a chemist, said that he left Christchurch early one morning for a cycling trip of 140 miles through Coalgate, Glentunnel, the Rakaia Gorge, Methven, Ashburton and then home. When he was going through the Rakaia Gorge, his lamp dropped off and rolled down a gully’, which was too steep for him to descend. He decided to push on and try to get home before dark, but a head wind delayed him so that he was overtaken by darkness on the Main South Road before he could reach Christchurch. He added that on such trips he usually' took two lamps. The Magistrate: I must say it is a new excuse, but it is expecting a good deal of me to believe that story about the lamp.
