SPLASHES.

Notes and Comments. (By “ PIKE.”) Most summer sports are now in full swing and the next one to make its appearance will be swimming. The first week of next month will witness the opening of the majority of city clubs. The Phillipstown Club had a most successful annual meeting and the indications are that it will be participating in first-grade competition this season. Elmwood, with the largest membership roll in the city, continues to grow, the figures this year showing an increase of twenty. Somerfield are forging ahead, but East Christchurch and United are not making the progress they should. Elmwood showed initiative in obtaining the Australians, Clark, Tickle and Mr Dudley Hellmrich, for a carnival in Christchurch. This was a splendid move and the visit should give added interest to the sport during the early part of the season.

Many swimmers have started the new season by allowing themselves three or four nights a week at the Tepid Baths. In fact, one or two of last year’s “ regulars ” have been swimming since the close of last season. H. Horsfall is one of them. He is keen, and has developed a wonderful stroke—a stroke similar to that used by Walter Jarvis. However, he would be well advised to take a month’s spell.

S. Kingdon has put on weight during the off-season. He is in the water again and is swimming particularly well. Kingdon, who is now a senior, should do well this year in senior sprints.

E. M’Conville Is another who is looking well after six months’ rest. Last year he ended the season badly through starting too early and becoming stale. Al’Conville, however, will be out for all titles this year, and he should meet with fair success.

C. Cliff is going the right way about his training. He should have a successful year.

A. T, F. Stokes, who announced his retirement from competitive swimming last year, has put In an appearance and is going better than ever. It is generally thought that Stokes will be racing again this year.
