A Rat Visitation.

Dear Sir, —Could any of your readers enlighten me on the following? At a friend's house rats are nesting in the ground near to where an old well used to be. Strange to say, they were absent during the winter, and now in the spring they have put in their appearance again. Could any reader tell me what type of rat they are and what measures should be taken to exterminate them?—I am, etc., R. F. ANDREWS.
