The Union Steam Ship Company’s big I Trans-Tasman liner Monowai, which ! occupied the Jubilee Floating Dock at Wellington on Tuesday and Wednesday last, has undergone an extensive overhaul. Apart from the usual annual survey of the hull and engines, involving a thorough inspection of the ship s structure and machinery by Governl ment and Lloyd's officials, a special i survev has been made of the life-saving i appliances in accordance with the recommendations of the latest Interna- . tionaJ convention for the Safety of Life !at Sea. The vessel was found to be i praeticallv up to the standard of the i new rules, only a few minor alterations j being required. A radio-direction finder iis being provided. During the course of the overhaul the whole of the. first I class and cabin class accommodation ; lias been repainted and re-decorated. Special attention has been given to the I first class music room, which presents | a fresh and pleasing appearance with ' new upholstery and decorations in I shades of pink. The floor coverings of ! the first class dining and smoke rooms ! and the cabin class dining and music j rooms and elsewhere in the ship have been relaid with special flooring of varied colouring and attractive designs in harmony with the general decorations of the various apartments, a total of about a thousand square yards being used. A new and up-to-date panatrope will supplement the ship's orchestra and the talkie picture apparatus. The. Monowai will resume running on Friday next, leaving Wellington for Sydney on that day.
