WORK OF Y.W.C.A.

Reviewed in Annual Report. The annual report of the Christchurch branch of the Young Women's Christian Association records a year of great activity. The association, it is stated, was this year faced with the necessity of painting the interior and roofing of the Choral Hall, reflooring part of the old wooden building and installing new heating and cooking apparatus in the hostel. Apart from this expense, the utmost economy was exercised in all departments. Referring to the senior department, for all groups and activities for girls over eighteen years of age, five senior groups met regularly, the total membership being 150. The girls’ department, for those between thirteen and eighteen years, had a membership slightly lower than last year’s. The summer camp at New Year for these girls was a new venture, but most worth while. A membership drive was started in August. The Mothers’ Club was still progressing well, with a membership of fortyeight. Work to benefit unemployed girls plays an important part in the working of the Y.W.C.A., and the report states that its bureau has been open for two hours each afternoon for interviewing and registering girls arid women unemployed. Some 205 have been placed in temporary positions or given other assistance. Vocational courses in salesmanship and needlework held this year were attended by over eighty girls. Thirty of them had left to take up po»sitions. The average number of women using the hostel was thirty, and the number of. transients totalled 507. Financially, the year opened with a bank overdraft of £7-16 4s 8d and ended with an overdraft of £904 16s lOd.
