ANGLERS BUSY.

Some Very Good Fish Landed. PROSPECTS IMPROVING. Weather conditions have not been favourable for the opening of the fishing season, but despite this fact, some anglers have been fortunate in landing good fish. Good baskets were secured yesterday in the streams that run ifcto "Lake Ellesmere and a few excellent fish have been caught in pools in the Ilororata, one weighing close on 91b. The snow rivers are reported to be holding many more fish than usual, but for the most part they have been unfishable up to the present. It is said that the Lower Selwyn has seldom been in better shape for the opening, as the river has been high enough during the winter to allow plenty of trout to make their way up from the lake. Several good baskets have been reported from the Selwyn mouth and the stretch from there up to the huts. The best reported to date was one of fifteen between two rods, all the fish being good-conditioned and averaging a little under four pounds. The best fish taken was one of 101 b, one of a bag of four, which included a five-pounder and two of a little more than seven pounds. Good takes are reported from the Cam which appears to be full of fish. Prospects at the mouth of the Ashburton appear to be good, although flood waters and a high wind have hampered anglers. The Rakaia is partly in flood and has been unfishable so far. Ardent fishermen expressed the opinion this morning that there is every indication that the 1934-35 season would be a good one from all points of view. There are plenty of fish and anglers are optimistic for next week-end, by which time it is hoped that many of the rivers and streams will be clear for fishing purposes. ______________
