A Greedy Cuckoo.

Nature Notes.

Bu James Drummond, F.L.S.. F.Z.S. LAST SUMMER Mr W. Pavitt was annoved for three days by the continual squeaking of a gluttonous young shining cuckoo in his garden in Portland Road, Remuera. It did not give its fostermother, a grey warbler, a minute’s peace. It chased the delicate little grey warbler, about one-fifth of its own size, from bough to bough, demanding food, and more food, and still, more. It was never satisfied. The grey warbler seemed to give it onlv small earthworms. Mr Pavitt felt that it should have stuffed the voung cuckoo with good fat earthworms, following the example of female song-thrushes with their young. lie has counted about twentv species .of birds that visit his garden, which covers half an acre. As there are no cats or dogs, it is a kind of sanctuary. The visitors seem to realise this and are tame and friendlv.
