MINE FLOODED.
43 Feet of Water in Shaft at Hikurangi. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, September 24. The fate of the Hikurangi coal mine is in the balance. For some time the pumping facilities had not been giving entire satisfaction, and last week, in spite of strenuous efforts against the inflow cf water, the mine was flooded. On Friday there was 43 feet of water in the shaft. It is estimated that the water is owing in at the rate of 14,000 gallons an hour. The Waro has not so far been affected. The result of the flooding has been to throw 164 men out of work at a time when hopes were being entertained for the improvement of the industry. The output of the mine has been about 1000 tons per week, chiefly for the Raihvays Department, and the loss of this order will be a severe one for the Hikurangi township. The Town Board has recently completed a new water supply and laid down the main streets of the tpwn in bitumen. The fact of the mine being rendered idle is serious for the town.
