FENDALTON PARK.
Poll of Ratepayers to Be Taken. AUTHORITY GIVEN BY COUNCIL. The Waimairi County Council decided last evening to comply with a request from the Fendalton Domain Board to take a poll of ratepayers, in connection with the provision of a park for the district. The letter from the board stated that Miss K. Gerard’s property had been selected by the board as the site for a park, and made the request to the council to cause the required steps to be taken for a poll of ratepayers of the district, authorising the loan necessary for the purchase. The purchase price for the property was £3250, and the board asked the council to provide for a loan sufficient to cover it, together with the cost of the poll, the first year’s interest and sinking fund and £2OO contingencies. An option to purchase the property had been obtained. Mr G. G. Gardner outlined the steps taken up to the present time. He stated that there were certain features about the position. He favoured another property, where the school children would benefit. He would not take it on himself to recommend the council to take the poll. Mr F. S. Scott said that the feeling in Fendalton was strongly in favour of a park for the district. It would not be wise for the council to voice any opposition. The clerk (Mr G. S. Cowper) said j that, if the council approved of the j proposal, three months would elapse. | owing to legal requirements, before the | poll could be taken. Any ratepayer had the right to lodge an objection against inclusion in the special rating area which would be defined. On the motion of Mr W. J. Walter, it was decided to comply with the request.
