Costing £5,500,000 the Mettur Dam over the Kaveri River, in South India, claimed to be the largest in the world, being three times as long as the Assouan Dam over the Nile, was open- | ed on Tuesday by Sir George Stanley, i Governor of Madras. The dam will irrigate practically the whole of the : Tanjore and part of Trichinopoly Dis- _ tricts.
