OBITUARY.

H. A. Bruce.

By the death of Mr 11. A. Bruce, who passed away at his residence, Cashmere Hills, to-day,’ in his seventysixth year, another link with the early days of Canterbury has been dissolved. Mr Bruce’s parents were pilgrim settlers who arrived in Lyttelton in 1851, Mr Bruce being born in Lyttelton in 1858, though the family removed to Christchurch in that year. Educated at St Luke’s School and the Commercial School of Ms T. M. Gee, Mr Bruce entered the office of Wilson, Sawtell and Co., and in later years was accountant to Fletcher, Humphreys and Co. For health reasons he removed to St Andrews, South Canterbury, where, in partnership with his brother, he conducted a general store for some years. Returning to Christchurch, Mr Bruce took a keen interest in gold-mining, being manager for a number of companies. He was for some years secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, being himself an angler and an accurate shot. Mr Bruce was for many years on the directorate of the Christchurch Building Society and a trustee of the Hyman Marks estate, and was also an enthusiastic member of the Rhodes Convalescent Home Directorate, being recently appointed chairman in succession to the late Mr George Jameson. Mr Bruce was an enthusiastic bowler, being a life member of the Opawa Bowling and Croquet Club, which benefited greatly from his liberality. He was also a past president of the Cashmere Bowling Club. An ardent lover of flowers and shrubs, Mr Bruce devoted much time to his garden, which has one of the outstanding shrubberies of Cashmere Hills. He was three times married and is survived by his wife (who was formerly Miss Sarah Popple, of Springfield) and a sister, Mrs Charles Bean, and three brothers, Messrs J. IT. Bruce, of Fendalton, Arthur S. Bruce, of Bristol Street, ‘and A. Selwyn Bruce, of Cashel Street.
