NATIONAL WEEK OPENS.
Blue Mountain Wins Big Race at Addington To-day. INDIANAPOLIS IS UNPLACED. THE defeat of Indianapolis, who went out a strong favourite for the big event, was the first sensation when the August meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club opened at Addington to-day. The race was won by the second favourite, Blue Mountain, with the fourtli favourite, Roi l’Or second and Vesuvius third. The conditions made for an auspicious opening for Grand National Week, 1934, racing beginning in glorious spring-like weather. Crowds flocked to Addington, where they saw excellent racing on a track that was in first-class condition. The public also received a bad set-back in the Stewards' Handicap, which was won by the tenth favourite. Writer. The ninth favourite, Nicoya, was second, and the eleventh favourite, Mountain Mist, third.
The first race was a popular win for the favourite, Raclaim. who led all the way to win by a neck from the fourth favourite. Gay Paree. Don Chenault was third. The favourite, Morello, was unplaced in the Advance Handicap, William Tell, fifth favourite, just getting home from Elvo, second choice, with Worthy King third. I rtroductory Handicap by a neck, after 1 an all-in finish over the last furlong. ! She has improved since she raced at I Addington at Easter, and will go well ' on the second day. She was attended throughout the first mile by King’s Voyage, Nelson Ata, Gay Paree and Don Chenavilt. Going down the back straight the last time, Worthy Queen ran up to within j five lengths of the leader. Raclaim turned for home with Gay Paree, King’s Voyage, Don Chenault and Worthy Queen in hot pursuit. In a splendid finish, Raclaim hung on to win by the margin stated. Don Chenault made three breaks during the race but did not lose any ground. Wah and Real Belle broke early in the contest. Raclaim was favourite with £293. Gay Paree carried £142. Advance Handicap. A hot favourite in Morello broke | when he had travelled a furlong in the i Advance Handicap and ruined his chance. War Officer began fast, but at i the end of a furlong and a half, Elvo i dashed into the lead and headed the.field past the stand with Captain Wrack, War Officer, Grand Finale and Whippet racing in close order. Going along the back straight, Worthy King moved fast to join the leaders. Elvo was first into the straight, but in a tussle over the last furlong William Tell outstayed her to win by a head, with Worthy King half a length further away. Then came War Officer. Morello carried £713, William Tell £lB2 10s and Elvo £404. Running: of Morello. The Judicial Committee inquired into the running of Morello in the Advance Handicap and decided to accept the explanations of the owner, trainer and driver August Handicap. A special interest attached to the August Handicap as the winner quali-" fied for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Indianapolis was a hot favourite with £1144. Blue Mountain was second choice with £615 10s. Vesuvius and Silver d’Oro led off. Passing the stand the first time, Silver d’Oro led from Glenrossie, Blue Mountain, Kingcraft and Ayrmont Chimes. Into the back, Indianapolis had charge from Vesuvius, Silver d'Oro, Glenrossie, Blue Mountain and Ayrmont Chimes. With a round to go, Indianapolis was attended by Silver d’Oro, Vesuvius, Glenrossie and Blue Mountain. The order was the same entering the back, where Glenrossie made a fast dash up to the leaders. Indianapolis led into the straight from Glenrossie, Blue Mountain and Roi L’Or. Indianapolis closed up soon after. Blue Mountain took charge and just staved off Roi L’Or to win by a head, with Vesuvius half a length away. RGi 1 Or carried £215 10s, and is the first horse in New Zealand to go two miles inside 4min 15sec. three times. Harold Logan has done it twice. J. S. Shaw and Blue Mountain were given a good reception on returning to the enclosure. Trial Handicap. War Buoy, champion two and three-year-old of his year, began his four-year-old career auspiciously bv winning the Trial Handicap. The favourites were War Buoy £958, and Willow Wave £549 10s. Willow Wave and Erin’s Princess were slow away and were second last and last most of the way. War Buoyled throughout. Early he was attended by Gunmetal and Golden Direct. Rey Spec took second place when they’ had completed a circuit. Beginning the final round, War Buoy was followed by Rey Spec, Gunmetal, Golden Direct, Pronto Bingen and Queen Author. The ordex was much the same entering the back. Willow Wave began a fine run three furlongs from home. Coming into the straight. War Buoy r was followed by Rey Spec, Willow Wave and Harold Denver. War Buoy held his own and | won with ease by a length from WilI low Wave, with Rey’ Spec a length land a half away ;third. Harold Denver j was fourth. i This was the seventh successive win- ! of War Buoy. Stewards’ Handicap. | Outsiders filled the places in the I Stewards’ Handicap for which Don Chenault, £503 10s, and Louis Bingen, . £474, were the popular fancies.
Biddy Parrisji would not go away. Gay Paree was the leader throughout the early stages. At the outset, Don Chenault. Great Burton. Writer and Fifa were nearest to him. These five formed a leading division along the back the first time. With a round to go. Gay Paree led from Writer, Don Chenault, Fifa, First Wracsk, Mountain Mist. Great Burton and Stanley T. There was little change entering the back, but, with three furlongs to go. Writer took charge from Fifa and • Mountain Mist. j These were the leaders into the straight, with Nicoya and Gay Paree next. Writer kept his advantage and won by two lengths from Nicoya, who finished strongly and beat Mountain Mist by a head. Fifa was fourth. Writer, who had not won a race for over two years, carried £IOO 10s, and Nicoya was entrusted with £43. Queen Mary Handicap. Sure was a solid favourite for the Queen Mary Handicap with Cloudy Range, coupled with Wrackler, second choice, carrying £SBB 10s. Sure led off from Lord Leslie and, passing the stand the first time, Sure was the leader from Cloudy’ Range, Lord Leslie, Arabond, Mountain Ore, Taxpayer, Tempest, Wrecker, and John Jinks. There was little change goipg along the back, and when they came round again, the order was still the same. Going along the back the last time. Sure was attended by Cloudy Range, Lord Leslie, Arabond, Wrecker and Taxpayer. Cloudy Range joined Sure in thj lead after rounding the far turn, with Wrecker moving up. Cloudy Range led into the straight from Sure, Wrecker, Lord Leslie and John Jinks. Wrecker then looked very’ dangerous, but Cloudy’ Range hung on well and beat him by half a length, with Sure a neck away. Lord Leslie was fourth. Wrecker was entrusted with £165 10s. Cloudy Range is leased from Durbar Lodge by E. C. M’Dermott, hence his coupling with Wrackler. Selwyn Handicap. In a fast run race Prairie King, the favourite with £507 10s, for the Selwyn Handicap was beaten into third place. Girvan, second choice with £493 10s, broke down in the race. Erin’s Fortune looked after the leadership early and showed the way’ past the stand the first time to Morning Sun, Prairie King, Chenwood, Wild Guy and Nelson d’Oro. With a round to go, Chenwood deposed Erin’s Fortune, with Morning Sun, Prairie King, Nelson d’Oro, Wild Guy and Peter Locanda next. Chenwood and Erin's Fortune were the leaders entering the back, but Chenwood was well clear at the far turn. Chenwood was first into the straight from Prairie King and Wild Guy. The last named finished brilliantly on the outside and won by’ two lengths from Chenwood, with Prairie King a similar margin away. Linelln was fourth. The winner carried £179 10s. International Handicap. A brilliant field contested the International Handicap, for which the Avernus-Sir Guy bracket was a solid favourite with £594 10s. Roddy was second choice with £293 10s. and the Pegaway-Red Shadow bracket carried £249. Owing to the position of the sun the visibility’ was bad from the stand. Avernus led off and was first past the judge's box the first time from Pegaway, Probationer, Arethusa and Roddy. Avernus led along the back from Pegaway, Probationer, Roddy and Arethusa. Coming to the straight, Avernus was attended by Pegaway’. Roddy’ and Probationer. As they swept into the straight, Pegaway had charge, but Roddy forced his waythrough and won a good race by a neck, with Vesuvius a length and a half away third, and Gold Country a bead away’ fourth. Tctalisator Returns. The tctalisator handled £20,750 at Addington to-day—the first day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August meeting—as compared with £17,971 for the same day last year. The increase amounted to £2779.
