AUCKLAND SCHEME.

Standard Wages for Relief Works. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 11. The Auckland City Council’s proposal to complete all its No. 5 scheme as subsidised jobs, paying the men standard wages for time worked, is to be considered at the next meeting of the Unemployment Board. The Mayor (Mr Hutchison) said on his return today from Wellington that he had arranged with the Unemployment Board for a satisfactory rate of subsidy, but to complete the scheme it would be necessary to ask the ratepayers to sanction a loan. This, he felt confident, would be in their interests. The men most suitable for jobs would be selected from those at present working and, when sufficient had been selected for the council's schemes about 709 of the 1500 which the council was *HO\v employing would be placed on sustenance. As the efficiency of relief workers was not nearly so high now as when the schemes started, a better return would be obtained by completing them under a standard wages plan than under relief conditions.
