! Canterbury Team Beaten at Dunedin. SECOND SPELL RALLY. (Special to the “ Star.”) DUNEDIN, August 11. The Otago-Canterburv match attracted an attendance of 12,000. The ground was in good order and the weather fine. The teams were: Canterbury Nolan, Bullivant. M’Phail, Mann, Henry, Mortlock, Oliver, Andrews, Francis, Brownlee. Deavoll, Thompson, Lowry, Innes and Hattersley. Otago—Nicholson. 11. M Skimming, R. M’Skimming. Dunne, Trevathan, Fookes, Simon, Chapman, Niven, Allen, Gibson, Vorrath, Hamilton, Lucy and M’Donald. From a loose scrum Canterbury passing went to Mann, who reversed in to Mortlock on the Otago twenty-five, Bullivant picking up but failing in an attempt to drop a goal. Otago took play to the Canterbury line where Simon essayed a pot unsuccessfully, but after a*scramble R. M’Skjmming passed* in to Dunne, who forced his way over near the corner after seven minutes. Trevathan failed to convert. Deavoll missed a penalty and Otago broke away with a passing rush. Then Canterbury were penalised for off-side play and Trevathan was successful. The score after thirteen minutes’ play was Otago 6, Canterbury 0. Lowry replaced Brown, who -was injured. A bad pass from Trevathan was snapped up by Bullivant, who took play to the Otago line, Canterbury pressing hotly, but Trevathan found the line well. Otago secured the ball from the majority of the scrums, but poor passing allowed the quick-breaking Canterbury forwards to break up the movement. However, scrambling play thirty yards out enabled Trevathan to drop-kirk a beautiful goal for Otago. Otago 10, Canterbury 0. A few minutes later Simon cut through grandly, but Nolan saved weir Then Mortlock pulled Dunne down. Mortlock continually saved by finding the line, but Otago kept up the offensive. Another scrum infringement enabled Trevathan to add three points. Otago 13, Canterbury 0. From a line-out M’Phail found touch at the Otago corner, where Trevathan was badly off-side and Deavoll surceeded in kicking a goal from a difficult angle. Otago 13, Canterbury 3. From half-way M’Phail and Mann raced away, R. M’Skimming just pushing Mann into the corner flag. Otago were penalised for lying on the ball, Deavoll’s kick just missing. The Canterbury passing livened up, but at halftime the score was: Otago 13, Canterbury 3. Second Spell. Canterbury re-started vigorously, only a succession of line kicks by Simon saving Otago, but Innes and Oliver eventually reached the line, and Oliver threw himself over. Deavoll’s kick missed. Otago 13, Canterbury 6. Canterbury began obtaining the ball from the scrums, and they had always had the best of the line-outs. Fookes was penalised for obstruction. Then the Canterbury forwards went away in a rush. Simon again saving. Mortlock. M’Phail and Mann took play to the Otago line. Nolan essayed to pot, and only the bounce of the ball prevented Mann from scoring. Otago were badly rattled and allowed Canterbury to run through them. Nolan missed a penalty kick. Then Otago rallied, Hector and Ron M’Skimming combining with Simon and M’Donald to stage a great run from sixty yards, 11. M’Skimming scoring. Trevathan’s kick was just outside. Otago 16. Canterbury 6. Another good run by M’Skimmings and Fookes was stopped by Mortlock. Play became faster. Murphy replaced Vorrath. who was injured. Canterbury were still pressing but Simon and R. M’Skimming repeatedly saved. Simon was penalised for picking out of the scrum. Deavoll goaled. Otago 16. Canterbury 9.
Nolan lined- a sixty-yard kick. Simpson replaced Innes. Then M’Phail made a good run, passing to Mann, who returned th‘e ball for Bullivant to score. Deavoll’s kick failed. Ot?j;o 16, Canterbury 12.
With seven minutes to go the Otago forwards hurled themselves on the Canterbury line. but Mortlock saved. Trevathan passed to Pookes and M’Skimming was pulled det n five yards from the line by Nolan. Simon again headed a rush and the game ended in Canterbury’s twenty-five. OTAGO 16 CANTERBURY 12 Junior Match. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, August 11. The junior inter-provincial Rugby final resulted: Otago 11, Canterbury 3.
