CYCLING NOTES.
BY “ WHEEL.” k - • Jj Riders on long marks filled the main places in the newly-formed Kalapoi Amateur Clubs eighteen miles road race last Saturday. The first three positions were taken by men off the 4 Amin mark. C. M’Alister and A. J. Green, off the lmin mark, teamed well, but could not catch the leaders who finished over a minute in front of them. The scratch men finished lmin 17secs behind the C. A. Cooper, the winner, made the most of his start and also worked well with his co-markers, M. M’Creedy and L>. Wilson. Cooper, however, was too good for them in the final sprint. Although he has not been prominent in recent road races. Cooper should make good in the future. M’Creedy', second place, also showed improved form, ilia chief weakness was his effort in the final sprint. Wilson, third place, ran M’Creedy close for second place. It was his best performance this season. C. M’Alister, fourth place, is improving rapidly and should reach championship form shortly. He has had a great deal of racing experience in all departments of the sport. M’Alister is one of the best all-round amateurs at present competing. A. J. Green, fifth place, is a most consistent cyclist and can always be depended on to finish close up. P. Xorrell did not ride as well as usual. G. Savage caused a surprise by defeating J. C. Murray for fastest time honours. The farewell complimentary dance to Len Hill, the well-known cash rider, v/ill be held at New Brighton to-night. Hill leaves for Melbourne, on August 3. The North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen's Union has announced that this 5 ear’s big road race will be held on Sati rday. The date has been put forward about three weeks in order to allow New Zealand’s representatives in the Victorian Centenary Thousand sufficient time to prepare for the 1100-mile event. *: The prize-list for the Oamaru race will be announced shortly, and the executive of the North Canterbury Centre will meet this evening to complete arrangements. Through the Mavor of Oamaru (Mr F. Cooney) the public of Oamaru have made a grant of £23 towards expenses.. Taranaki, Gisborne and the Otago Centre have already signified their intention of sending representatives to compete in the Oamaru race. The fifty-mile Canterbury road championship will be held by the Prebbleton Cash Cycling Club on August 25, at Prebbleton. A programme of weekly road races has been arranged for amateur riders. This series will finish with the annual “ Round the Gorges ” race on September 15. The race will start at Hawera and proceed to Eltham, Kaponga, Opunake and Manaia, finishing at Hawera. Trophies to the value of £llO will be allotted. Remain Gijssels, the brilliant Belgian cyclist, had another important victory last month when he won the fourth annual Paris-BeKort ♦* nce # « of 262 J miles. Although no definite announcement has yet been made as to Opperman’s future movements abroad, it is practically certain that he will be returning to Australia within a few weeks to pre- : pare for the Centenary road cycle race. ! There was talk of an individual tour of France, in which Opperman was to take part, but the pi ; opos a J will not materialise until next year, when it will probably be staged on the American system of teams of two cyclists, only one being allowed on the road at one time.
