GAOL FOR BIGAMIST.
“ Deliberate Contempt of Law.” SENTENCE AT TIMARU. Per Press Association. TIMARU. July 26. In the Supreme Court this morning Walter Ernest Watson, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of bigamy, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprison vent, to be followed by twelve months’ reformative detention. Mr Justice Johnston', after reading a statement handed up by the prisoner said, “ It is quite clear that you deliberately entered into the second marriage without the slightest evidence on which you could assume that your first wife was not living. You changed your name and went away and did not make any effort to maintain vour wife and children. “ You say that seven years passed without your hearing from your wife and that you had several offers of marriage to w’hich you said: ‘No.’ I cannot regard the statement other than as an excuse for a deliberate contempt of the law.”
