OBTAINED £75
Man Claimed to Have Secret Invention. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 25. George Edward Owen Cross, aged 40 years, a salesman, was charged today with obtaining from John Sydney Stringer, a Customs official, £75 by falsely representing that he was an intelligence officer attached to the War Office and had a secret invention which was being purchased by the New Zealand Government. Stringer was induced to part with the money regardless of the fact that the accused refused to disclose the nature of the invention, or his private address. The accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. Evidence was given that the accused was arrested on the Mariposa at Auckland. He had assumed the name of Captain Bradley. Mention was made of a statement by the accused alleging that a certain other party was implicated in the case and if there was anything in it it probably would have some bearing on the sentence. The Magistrate (Mr E. Page) suggested that counsel should submit the matter to the judge, who would deal with the matter, and a detectivesergeant said that a report concerning the matter would be furnished within the next day or two.
