MONSTER BRIDGE PARTY.

Karitane Funds Will Benefit. OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. Bridge parties in Christchurch have a way of assuming large proportions, but that held last evening at Ballantjme’s was second to none, both for size and enjoyment. Given a worthy object, such as the Karitane Baby Hospital, on behalf of which a big campaign has been in progress throughout Canterbury during the last few months, and capable organisers such as Mrs Kenneth Ballantyne and her committee, an outstandingly successful party is bound to result. There were nearly 400 guests, who were received by Mrs Ballantyne and the members of her committee, Mesdames W. G. Scannell, Lionel Cooke, F. S. Grant, Misses Kathleen Hoare and Helen Thomson. Mrs Ballantyne wore a striking gown of black georgette. The uncommonly designed bodice was inset with bands of gold sequins and fine black net, and a gold buckle clasped the wide swathed black belt. Mrs Cooke’s attractive gown of date-brown windswept velvet had long-fitting sleeves, open at the shoulder. The neckline was edged with gold lame, and the long cowl at the back showed a lame lining. Mrs Grant wore a dainty frock of white chiffon, run with silver thread and patterned in Persian rust and black. With this she wore a fuchsia-purple satin coatee. Miss Hoare wore a smart patterned tunic of silver and black over a satin skirt. Miss Thomson's dainty frock of forget-me-not blue crepe ninon, with floral design in lemon and rose, was worn under a blue and silver shot lan\e coatee. Most of the guests played bridge in the two larger rooms, which were beautifully decorated with a profusion of foliage and flowers, in which Iceland poppies and lemon daisies predominated. Others found entertainment in a vareity of table games in the smaller room. All three rooms were warmed by large cheery-looking fires, and the tables were covered with dainty cloths of jade and pale rose. Object of the Party.

The urgent need of funds for the hospital was explained by Mrs Cecil Wood, secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society, who deputised for Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson, the president, in officially opening the party. Mr Kenneth Ballantyne, in introducing Mrs Wood, said that unfortunately Mrs Cracroft Wilson, through indisposition, was unable to be present. A dainty bouquet of pink sweet peas was presented to Mrs Wood by Mrs Ballantyne. The funds of Karitane had been sadly depleted, mainly through the reduction of the Government grant, said Mrs Wood, who also explained the working of the hospital and its importance to the community. A special guinea appeal had been launched by the Plunket Society Committee, which had realised £350, and to this would be added the results of the bridge party, to which the large number of people present had given their support. In thanking Mrs Ballantyne and her committee, - Mrs Wood paid a special tribute to her wonderful effort in organising such a large party. Thanks were due also to Messrs Ballantyne and Co., who year by year had helped the society so generously, and also to those firms who had donated the prizes. At the conclusion of play a dainty ( supper was served. Tlte Players. Those present were:—Dr and Mrs P. A. Ardagh, Captain and Mrs F. Farthing, Mr and Mrs George Cowie. Mr and Mrs E. L.
