DETERMINED EFFORT.

Much Depends on Hendren and Leyland. England are making a determined effort to stave off defeat in the fourth Test, and if the wicket continues to be reasonably good, their chance is a very fair one. Six wickets have still to fall, and Ilendren, Leyland. Ames. 11 op wood. Verity, Mitchell and Bowes are to be disposed of. Still. England remains 190 behind, and on the showing of the first innings. at least, the tail is not dangerous. A lot will depend on that redoubtable pair. Ilendren and Leyland. They take a lot of shifting on a good wicket and can make the runs as well, jso that the position is one of great I sporting chances. On yesterday’s batting it would seem that O’Reilly was fairly well under control, and that Wall was proving innocuous. It is hard to see why Eheling was not given a chance on this occasion. These Tests have produced such a succession of surprises that anything might happen. It looks as though the finish will be very close, but if O’Reilly strikes form Australia might take an easy win; and, conversely, if Ilendren and Leyland get going again on an easy wicket. England might pull the game out of the fire with ease. Leyland’s scores in the Tests to date have been: 6 and 18, 109, 153 and 16. Ilendren’s have been: 79 and 3, 13, 132 and 29. The game shows how hard it is to win a Test match in four days on a good wicket. Even after England’s unaccountable collapse, and then the superb batting of Bradman and Ponsford, Australia will have to exert every effort to snatchc a victory.
