JTXGINE repairs to the expedition ships Bear of Oakland and Jacob Ruppevt. which have been laid up at Dunedin and Port Chalmers since their return from the ice. are well under way. The foremast of the Bear of Oakland was lifted out yesterdav in preparation for stepping a new one. The new spar arrived at Auckland from Puget Sound by the Wairuna, and is a Douglas fir 78ft long and 4}ft in diameter. Only one mill in the Dominion is able to carry out the work, on account of the length, and the log will be squared to the appropriate size at Auckland.
