SEVERE QUAKES.
Whole of Northern India Rocked. EPICENTRE IN AFGHANISTAN. United Press Assn. — By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received Tulv 24, 10.30 a.m.) CALCUTTA, July 23. The whole of Northern India was shaken by severe earthqtiake shocks at 1.30 this morning. Hitherto slight damage was reported. The epicentre of the quake is estimated to be in south-east Afghanistan. NOT RECORDED HERE.
Mr 11. F. Baird, of the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory, said this morning that the earthquake in India had not been recorded in Christchurch. This indicated that it had not been of the first magnitude. There had not been any earthquakes recorded during the twentyfour hours ending at 9 o’clock this morning. During the previous five days, twenty oversea shocks, and several local shocks had been recorded. “It is the worst period for heavy shocks that we have ever recorded.” he continued. “ The fact that in this disturbed period the large majority of the shocks occurred outside New Zealand goes to show that the Dominion is not nearly as important an earth-quake-producing country as many people allow their fears to imagine.”
