GARDEN ALLOTMENTS.

The annual meeting of the Garden Allotments Committee was held yesterday afternoon, Mr M. J. Barnett (deputy chairman) presiding. The annual report stated that since August 10, 1933, a depot for the distribution of seeds, plants and manures had been operated by the committee in the Reserves Department’s office on Thursdays and Saturdays. The com mittee, by arrangement with city seeds.men, had been able to purchase pea and bean seed»s at 3d a packet and other vegetable seeds at lid a packet. The seeds were resold at 2d and Id a packet respectively, so that relief workers had been able to obtain 6d packets for 2d and 3d packets for Id. The Reserves Department of the City Council had also supplied celery, cabbage, cauliflower and leek plants, which were sold at a very cheap rate. The committee had again conducted a vegetable growing competition, fifty-four entries being received compared with 122 last year. The decline in the entries might be attributed to the dry season experienced last summer. The report and balance-sheet, which showed 'h. credit of £IS Os lOd, were adopted. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr W. W. Scarff paid a tribute t.o the work of , Mr Barnett and the thoroughness of the secretary (Mr L. N. Hitchens). Mr G. Maginness also expressed the thanks of the committee for the assistance of the Reserves Department, of which Mr Barnett is superintendent. The following officers were re-elect-ed:—Chairman, the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan. M.P.) ; deputy chairman, Mr M. J. Barnett: secretary, Mr L. N. Hitchens: treasurer, Mr J. W. Niven; members of the committee, Messrs G. Maginness, J. S. Barnett, B. G. Goodwin, T. A„ Johnson, T. D. Lennie, L. B. Hart. J. T. Sinclair. J. N. M’Leod, E. Taylor, W. W. Scarff. J. D. Carolin, C. J. Goldstone, 11. JL. Darton and T. V. Grimley. It was resolved to ask Messrs G. Mazev and W. 11. Nicholson (Mayor of Sumner) to become members of the committee. It was decided to write to various organisations asking them to appoint representatives on the committee. The depot, it was agreed, should be opened as early in August as possible
