LEAKING GAS MAINS.
Trouble Develops at Sumner. The Sumner Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. W. Harris), Councillors A. Holden, H. L. Wiggins, J. 12. Tait, C. Hart, H. E. Ivennett and G. F. Allen. The engineer reported that trouble was being experienced in Pratt Street and Bay View Road with leaking gas mains. They were continually filling with water, thus cutting off the supply of gas. This had been going on now for a period of over two weeks. A syphon had been fitted in Bay View Road to collect the water, but this filled up in a few hours. The water from these sections was clear and appeared to be surface water. The only remedy seemed to be the laying of cast iron mains and service pipes coated with cement. The council decided to ask the engineer to submit a comprehensive report at the next meeting. A letter was received from the W.E.A. asking for a donation. The request was declined with regret. The offer of Restar, Ltd., to give sufficient paint to cover the roof of the lifeboat shed was accepted with thanks. A letter from the Main Highways Board with reference to granting permits for extra heavy traffic was received. Councillors were of the opinion that the proposal that the board be given permission to grant permits was a good one, to take the place of the present unweildv system. The suggestion was approved. With reference to the conversion of borough loans, the following resolution was passed: “ That pursuant to the provisions of the Local Authorities Interest Reduction and Loans Conversion Act, 1032-33, and the amendments thereto. a special meeting of the council he held on Monday, July 30, for the purpose of passing a special resolution to issue new securities in conversion of sucli existing securities as are specified in “ The Sumner Borough Loans Conversion Orders ” published in the New Zealand Gazette of July 13. 1934.” Councillor Harris referred to the appointment of Mr W. Stewart to the position of Valuer-General, and it was unanimously decided to write to Mr Stewart congratulal ing him on his nnpointment and thanking him for his past services. The tender of Andersons, Ltd., of £S63 for the resheeting of the gas holder was accepted, suhiect to the firm undertaking to complete the contract within three months from date of order?
Thanks were exnressed to the Mayor for a miniature rerwoduction of the nhotogranh of the Mayor and councillors recently placed in the Borough Council room.
