William Lewis, a Welshman, who lived in the eighteenth century, read several chapters of the Bible every morning and drank eight gallons of ale every evening. He died in the act of quaffing a cup of Welsh ale. It was estimated that in the course of his life he had drunk enough ale to float a man-of-w’ar. His singular thirst had a fattening effect, since he weighed 40 stone.
