PETROL TAXATION.

Tramway Board Negotiating for a Share. REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT. The Christchurch Tramway Board is continuing negotiations with the Government in regard to a share of petrol taxation given to local authorities to assist in road maintenance expenses, according to a report before the meeting of the board this morning. At the present time the board receives no assistance from the tax. The chairman (Mr E. J. Howard, M.P.) said that neither Auckland nor Christchurch- received any share of the petrol taxation, although Wellington and Dunedin, where the trams were controlled by the City Council, did receive something.

The general manager (Mr Frank Thompson) said that local authorities received 8 per cent of the tax, and the board was making efforts to receive a share.

Mr G. T. Thurston asked if amalgamation of local bodies in Christchurch would entitle Christchurch to a share of the tax. Mr Howard: That is so. The clause in the report was approved.
