According to Anglo-Saxon laws, every man’s life, including that of the King, was valued at a fixed price. Anyone who took it could commute the offence bv a money payment upon a fixed scale. The life of a peasant was reckoned to be worth 200 shillings; that of a man of noble birth 1200 shillings; and the killing of a king involved the regicide i:i a payment of 7200 shillings.
