ANNUAL COMPETITION.

Function at Stanmore Band’s Rooms. The first annual solo competition of the Stanmore Silver Band was held in the band’s clubrooms on Saturday and proved most successful. Th'ere was a large attendance and keen competition. The competition was due to the enterprise of the new conductor (Mr N. M’Leod Smith) and lie was congratulated on its success. The first prize, presented by Air W. J. M. Gosney, was won bv Mr J. Johnston (B fiat cornet. “The Lost Chord”), and for the second, donated l>v Mr A. Partridge, of tlite Woolston Band, there was a tie between Messrs X. A. Newcomb (tenor horn. “Smithy”) and T\ Smith <E flat bass. “Drink to Ate Only”). The competition was judged by Air U. J. Estall and the prizes presented by Mr Arthur Lilly, president of the band. Mr* Estall gave an interesting address to the assembled bandsmen. At the social evening following the contest, Mr Lilly, on behalf of tli'e band, accepted an enlarged framed photograph of the band’s founder. Air AV. J. M. Gosney.
