EXTRA BURDEN.

Cabinet to Carry On in Mr Hamilton’s Absence.

DISTRIBUTION OF WORK. (“Star ” Parliamentary Reporter ) WELLINGTON*, July 22. After considering the position yesterday morning. Cabinet decided to carry the extra burden of work during the period required for the recovery of the Hon A. Hamilton, rather than lose his services altogether. His portfolios will be distributed, and no further appointments will be made in the meantime. A fairly large section of the Government considered that the strength of the Ministry should be increased, but evidently the question of economy decided against that view. It is also probable that public opinion in favour of the retention of Mr Hamilton’s services weighed with Cabinet when the decision was made. In making the announcement, the Prime Minister, Mr Forbes, said that Mr Hamilton had expressed a wish to be relieved of his portfolios for a month or two. After complete rest he would be able to resume his duties. He would be granted leave, and his portfolios tyould be distributed among other members of Cabinet. The Government did not intend to appoint another Minister or to increase the strength of the Ministry. No decision has yet been reached- regarding the temporary re-allocation of portfolios.
