SUNBATHERS COMPLAIN.
Planting of Marram Grass at North Beach. Though it is out of their season the number of bathers who have visited North Beach recently have complained of the planting of marram grass in the sand where many people are accustomed to sunbathe in the summer. The marram grass has been planted a long distance along the sandhills behind the breakwind, to the north of the North Beach Surf Club’s pavilion, and a second planting has been placed along in front of the stone wall facing the pavilion and extending north for some hundreds of yards. The bathers have stated that though that though the grass can be pulled up easily enough, when the summer comes the sharp stems will make sunbathing conditions extremely uncomfortable, as they found when the grass was planted previously. A number of those with objections to the work pointed out that surf club officials had time and again appealed to bathers to remain near the pavilion for the sake of safety, but it appeared as if the council’s action would drive bathers away from the area close to the pavilion.
