Lovelock Wins Mile From Americans. (Received July 23, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 22. Oxford and Cambridge Universities beat Princeton and Cornell Universities by seven points to five. Results: One mile: J. E. Lovelock (New Zealand and Oxford). 1, Bonthron (Princeton) 2, Leach (Oxford) 3. Time—4min 15 2-ssec. In the mile Lovelock, lying handy, challenged Bonthron in the last lap There was a terrific tussle, every yard being fiercely contested. The New Zealander entered the straight slightly ahead and won by two yards. The time was somewhat disappointing in view of the runners’ previous records. The newspapers also pay a tribute to Lovelock’s victory as a magnificent feat of clever running.
As a result of an appeal by the Town Clerk, the trustees of the Hyman Marks estate have made a further donation of £SO to the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund. The first donation by the trustees this year was an amount of £IOO.
