Crew that Helped to Make Lyttelton. 'J'HE WHOLE of. a ship's crew were employed ip June, 185 S, as part of the prison labour, in cutting and levelling the streets of Lyttelton. How the}'- came to this change of occupation is contained in a brief police court story that would have started a seamen’s strike right along the coast had it happened to-day. James Russell, one of the men of the ship Westminster, brought an action against the master, Captain Westgarth, for an assault committed on board the vessel the previous day. The rest of the crew of thirteen appeared to support the complaint £*nd to ask for a discharge for themselves in consequence of the ill-usage of their comrade.
