CHECKING THE GRASS GRUB.
Many complaints are made regarding the loss sustained through Iceland Poppy and strawberry plants being destroyed by grass grubs devouring the roots in winter time, when growth is more or less dormant. Other plants suffer, but not to the same extent. We have frequently advised the use of horticultural naphthalene to counteract these voracious grubs, and during the week have received from a Papanui grower confirmation of its efficacy. He writes:—“Regarding the difficulty of killing grass grubs in strawberry beds: I find that Restar fluid *9065 the job well. I used 2 gallons at 1 in 150 strength per sq. yard, washed in immediately with 3 gallons of water. At first I was afraid of burning the foliage, but found no ill-effect. What surprised me after a good kill was that growth came away very strongly, so it appeared to do the soil good.” This should be interesting to other growers.
